Its use characterizes dishes in Italy, Spain, India, the Middle East, and North Africa. It is best used sparingly, given its strong flavor, but it can define the taste of first courses, second courses, vegetables, and even fruit and desserts. In its dried form, it is excellent for herbal teas, drinks, candies, and liqueurs, aiding digestion.

Thanks to its active ingredient, menthol is effective against inflammation of the oral cavity, aids digestion, and soothes coughs.

Known since ancient times, it was used in China for its calming and antispasmodic properties. Hippocrates considered it an aphrodisiac and Pliny an analgesic.

It was also used in folk medicine to prevent cataracts, promote sleep, relieve renal or biliary colic pain, combat bad breath, and finally to reawaken sexual desire.

Interesting facts

Its scent seems to be very unpleasant to mice, which is why it was once scattered in barns to keep them away.
